So we took the small road (8 Miles single lane Speed limit 15 Miles per hour). I enjoyed to drive it (30 minutes from Highway 11), but had a 4 WD. It's not neccessary, but helps because there are several cracks in the road.
and a very short trail to silverswords, but that might only be interesting for botanics
We did spend 4 days in a house near Volcano village. So after visiting the Volcano National Park on one day and a Lava-Boat ride on another day we had some time and the luck of sunny weather.
From this point is a 10 mile hike ONE WAY, UP HILL if you want to get to the top of the Mt. So coming to this lookout is a waste of time if you want to go all the way up. You'll have to drive down to Volcano, up to Hilo, and another hr west to the other route up the Mt. It's a pretty view of the National Park most hikers were actually backpacking, for experienced hikers ONLY.
Good view on Halema'uma'u-crater from this outlook at Mauna Loa, if it's not cloudy!
Very disappointing. After a long drive, I could not see the mountain top. definitely not worth to very slow drive. I wish I would have spent the time doing something else.
