A must-see and remote place within Hawai'i volcanoes national park which combines archaeology, geology (more than just the usual lava flows) and native plants. Easy walk (mostly on a paved trail) to the footprints, then the Ka'u desert trail goes on for a while, until Mauna Iki and the spectacular pit craters for a good day hike, or further across the park for backpacking opportunities. No park fee required to park and hike. Portable restroom at the parking lot, but no water anywhere. Opposite to what another review says, there is no actively flowing lava there. Last eruption in the area was in the 70s.
Great to see lava up close. Don't be stupid. There is no wall or dividing line. You can walk straight up to it. Its an 8.5 mile round-trip journey. People rent out bikes for $10 a piece, so do that. The amount of walking time to coolness factor is not amazing. If I had biked it would have been amazing because the 8.5 mile trip with no shade would be a lot faster.
