You never knew you needed a heated towel rack until you get one. Warm towels after the shower is pretty nice.
Awesome, place to stay near the Volcano National Park. Could not ask for a better last night in Hawaii. Very comfortable and unique, quaint accommodations.
Perfect place to stop for breakfast after a predawn boat volcano tour and you're next stop is the Thurston Lava Tube or Kilauea caldera overlook area. Don't waste time stopping anywhere else along the hour long drive. Thought we were out of options before the park when we turned off here. I had the Black Sand Beach Three Flavors (guava, taro, and traditional) of Punalu’u Portuguese Sweetbread French Toast. Excellent! My husband had Pahoehoe Lava eggs, bacon and crispy hash browns which was also good. The choice also offered to substitute his meat for fresh catch for $3 extra! Where can you find that kind of a choice for the price?! The service was fantastic and hardly anyone else there, except for a small tour group (who usually know a good value). Food and drinks for 2 was $30 total for excellent food!
The restaurant is excellent. The beet soup and fish&crab sandwich are exquisite. Equal to any fancy resort restaurant in Maui except the price

Wifi - intermittent breaks where it just stops working even though it's still connected. Better staying on LTE.
Bathroom - Sink is probably the best overall. Nice pressure and big space. The toilet was alright. The shower has weird water pressure and spray (like a hose spray). Pressure will fluctuate depending on how many people using waste at the time. Best time to shower was in the morning.
Stayed at the lodge because it was close to the Volcanoes National Park. The room gets really hot during the day and there's no AC, so you'd best leave that fan on throughout the day if you plan to come back at all during the day. At night, it gets really cold, so you don't need AC, but you should turn on those heaters to stay warm.
Breakfast - Free breakfast for people staying at the lodge, but gratuity not included? Weirdest thing ever to tip for breakfast.
