This campground is in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and is one of our favorites on the Big Island. Clean camping area and facilities. Also, cabins for rent (though we always tent.) A 1/2 mile trail across the highway leads to Kilueala crater overlook.
Quiet campground, large pavilion (good for when it rains), and generally a nice place to camp. You don't really see any staff attendants around the campground and they won't let campers use the showers any more (even if you offer to pay). Bathrooms are clean enough, similar to what you find in the county parks. Kind of a bummer about the no-showers given it's now $15 a night for drive in sites.
Great campground and kept up with real well. Has a spacious pavilion to hang clothes, cook/ eat meals, or like me, take shelter from the rain to set up my tent. $10 a night isn't too bad and stayed two nights. .5 miles from the Kiliaea lookout. Good experiences!
If you can, get spot three. It is the best, up against a hillside and the farthest from the highway. The downsides to this campground are the lack of showers and the sound from the highway at night. The highlights are the short hike to the Jagger Museum, the red glow from the active volcano at night, and the wind in the eucalyptus trees. Nearest shopping is the general store at the Kilauea Military Camp. I really recommend a stop there. Great souvenirs, drinks, food, and other supplies at very reasonable prices, given the location.
I’ve stayed here several times in the past few years and this campground is super nice and it’s really cheap too. There’s always sites available. It’s in a eucalyptus grove and smells awesome. It has running water and pretty clean bathrooms. The only reason it doesn’t get 5 stars is because you can’t use the showers unless you rent a tent from them or stay in one of their cabins. Not even if you pay for them. Otherwise this place is great.
Be aware the campground is around 4000 feet elevation, and can be quite cool at night, and wet weather can add to the mix, so be prepared.
